The HISTORY(R) Channel teams up again with NBA Legend, author and activist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to greenlight the one-hour documentary, “Fight the Power: The Protests That Changed America” from executive producers Abdul-Jabbar and Deborah Morales of Iconomy Multi-Media & Entertainment and the Six West MediaTM Group, it was announced today during A+E Networks Upfront. This partnership marks the second collaboration between the network and Abdul-Jabbar, who received an Emmy nomination for outstanding narrator in “Black Patriots: Heroes of the Revolution.” The right to protest is embedded in every American’s DNA. Every major social and political advancement in our history – from labor, to race, to LGBTQ rights, to the women’s suffrage movement – has been the result of people taking to the streets to make their voices heard and demands known. “Fight the Power: The Protests That Changed America” will look at the impact key protests have had on the evolution of the United States, from past to present and explore the question: Does the arc of the moral universe bend toward justice when pressure is applied?
Public protest created this country in 1776 and continues to serve as a charged impetus for change in the 21st century. Civil disobedience has always forced our country to take an uncompromising look at itself to judge if we are on the right course. From protests in small cities fighting for local change to those that effect millions and garner national attention, every day people forged change. Anchored by sit down interviews and personal narratives from Abdul-Jabbar and supported with archival and current material, “Fight the Power: The Protests That Changed America” will explore the people and protests that shaped our societies, laws and culture, and that played an important role in making our country better.
“The history of protest in America is also the history of social progress,” said Kareem Adul-Jabbar.
“Fight the Power: The Protests That Changed America” is produced for HISTORY by the Six West MediaTM group. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Deborah Morales serve as executive producers for Iconomy Multi-Media & Entertainment.
